Carol Vernallis' Theory
Carol mentions that there isn’t always a balance between narrative and
performances in music videos. Also, the narrative isn’t always complete. Music
videos don’t always have narrative resolution at the end. They often pose
questions in the narrative that are not answered within the video
Carol says that the rules of continuity editing are broken
in music videos to draw attention to what is on the screen. Edits such as wipes
and special effects draw attention to themselves. Also, a master shot (base
track) is normally used to give the music video a structure. The camera tends
to move in time with the music.
