Research - Carol Vernallis' Theory (Task 5)

Carol Vernallis' Theory

Carol mentions that there isn’t always a balance between narrative and performances in music videos. Also, the narrative isn’t always complete. Music videos don’t always have narrative resolution at the end. They often pose questions in the narrative that are not answered within the video

Carol says that the rules of continuity editing are broken in music videos to draw attention to what is on the screen. Edits such as wipes and special effects draw attention to themselves. Also, a master shot (base track) is normally used to give the music video a structure. The camera tends to move in time with the music.

An example of a music video that uses a lot of special effects is 'Leave Me Alone' by Michael Jackson

An example of a music video that uses a lot of jump cuts is 'On The Floor' By Jennifer Lopez

Summer Work (Task 2)

Storyboard (Taylor Swift - Style)

During the summer holidays we were set a task to storyboard the different types of shots within the first 30 seconds of any music video. We had to annotate the type of shot it was and include key details about the mise-en-scene.

13 - synergy Activity

This activity helped me understand the importance of synergy and how every single artist have a feature that creates their brand image. For example for Draft Punk and their song 'Get Lucky' the features they have used for brand identity was the font, the helmets and the dark and mute colours used in both music videos , the album cover and the teaser trailer.

12- lip sync video

This is my first time lip syncing, putting the sound and the video together. I had to listen out for the first sound i heard in order to make the lip sync accurate.
